It is very important to note that schools do not protect their gay and lesbian students from verbal and physical abuse. There is an evident lack of educational programs concerning homosexuality as obvious risk factors that may really become the reason of suicide attempts of gay adolescent. In addition, the increasing isolation, confusion, and fear of rejection may also cause a higher risk for alcohol and drug abuse, assaults, sexually transmitted diseases, verbal abuse, physical depression, teen pregnancy, prostitution, and academic failure in comparison with heterosexual teens (Sears 54). All these signs and symptoms are likely to occur in schools. The possibility of psychological and physical damage to the developing gay teen is too high, and the schools are considered to be a reason of that problem as well as the source of a possible education and support. In addition, gay and lesbian teachers at the schools meet challenges unknown to the heterosexual teachers. They do not know whether or not to disclose their sexuality and how to do it. In this case lesbian and gay teachers support a “double standard” and try to keep their professional and personal lives separate, especially because they do not know if they will be employed when their “secret” is discovered (Griffin 25). The other well-known issue is if adolescents with gay or lesbian family members face problems of rejection or isolation.
