[…] This paper explores political systems of Great Britain and France, one of the most poweful countries in the world. There are strong differences between French and British political systems. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the official name) – is a parlimentary monarchy where the power lies in the hands of the parliament, or Prime Minister. The UK's current monarch and head of state is Queen Elizabeth II. Today, her role is mainly ceremonial. The United Kingdom is a very centralised state, with London's Westminster Parliament holding responsibility for most of the political affairs of the Kingdom. In recent years however, each of the countries apart from England has been granted its own governmental body responsible in varying degree for some internal matters. In France since the French Constitution of 1958 (more correctly, since the Weimar Constitution) is answerable to Parliament, a new form of government exists in France – it is called semi-presidential government. In the eyes of public opinion, however, France has a presidential system, since the President is elected directly by the people. So scholars defined France's system as a mixed or mongrel one, in other words as "semi-presidential." […]
